Obituary
Obituary-John B Miller, well known SD businessman and an active, staunch member of the Catholic church, died suddenly at St John Hospital, Huron, July 2nd at the age of 83. He was enroute home for a visit with family, relatives and friends, from Moose Haven Lodge, Orange Park, FL where he had retired three and one half years ago. J.B. was the eldest of the family of ten, born to Mr & Mrs V.C. Miller. He was born in St Mary's IA, September 24, 1888 and moved to Howard in 1910. On October 25, 1915 he married Cecelia Esser, daughter of Mr & Mrs Charles Esser, of Howard. He farmed southwest of Howard several years then moved to Polo where he built and operated a general merchandise store until 1947. To this union were born four daughters, Pauline, Esther, Eileen and Wanelda. His wife died on May 7, 1930 at age 35. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Catholic Order of Foresters, Macabees and Retail Merchants Association of SD. Before his retirement he was a parishoner of St. Liborius church, Polo and of St. Martin church, Huron.
Funeral services were held in Howard. There was a scripture service at 9 p.m. on July 5th and a concelebrated mass at St. Agatha Catholic church at 11 a.m., July 6th with interent at St. Joseph cemetery, Howard. Msgr. Henry P. Kolbeck beck officiated and Rev Richard Ortmeier, Platte, a native of Polo, preached the homily. Rev Dennis Meier, Ramona and Rev Louis Demmer, Farmer, assisted. Three nephew's children served and three grandchildren presented gifts at the offeratory. Pallbearers were five grandchildren, Jerry Loomer, Custer; Ray Martinmaas, Springfield; Randy Martinmaas, Sioux Falls; Rick and Lonny Martinmaas, Polo, and a nephew, Marvin Miller, Howard.
Survivors include four daughters, Pauline (Mrs. Myron Loomer), Custer; Sister Esther Marie ASC, David City, NE; Sister Rosemary PVBM, Aberdeen and Wanelda (Mrs. William Martinmaas) Polo and sixteen grandchildren. Also one sister, Mrs Thresia esia Peschong, Howard and four brothers, Frank, Otto and Herman of Howard and Henry, who just moved from Sioux Falls to Lake Madison.
